BRITTANY described by some as the 'Bow of France' is surrounded on three sides by more than 700 miles of coastline ranging from vast expanses of white sandy beaches to peaceful rocky coves. In fact the sea has always played an important role in the history of this beautiful part of the world - it was from across the Atlantic ocean in 5 AD that Celtic emigrants arrived from Britain and introduced the Breton language - now known as Brezoneg - and it is still spoken in some parts to this day. The Bretons, today some 2.8 million of them, have managed to retain their identity throughout the centuries and the region has developed more like a separate country rather than just another part of France. So much so that it is impossible today to separate Brittany from it's Celtic heritage, which can be witnessed in every aspect of its culture and customs: religious festivals, costumes, architecture and music - and the Breton flag ( the Gwenn-ha-Du) with its with its five black stripes, four white ones and 11 'heraldic ermines' can be seen at every corner.

| Dinan,
an architectural gem and a town of great artistic and historic interest, is set
on a hill overlooking the wooded Rance valley and is described by some as 'The
prettiest town in France'! Dinan is a modern market town with a medieval heart. Surrounded by ramparts, the well kept, half timbered houses and cobbled streets of its old town have an impressive, unforced unity. Beyond the urban streets lie the meadows and 17th century Abbey of Léhon and further away dotted across the countryside are springs, lakes, gardens and castles - all reminders of a colourful history, forming scenery steeped in serenity and peace.
